Montenegro, a small yet strikingly diverse country, is a hidden jewel of the Balkan Peninsula. Situated in Southeastern Europe, it is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, and across the Adriatic Sea to the west, Italy. This advantageous location makes Montenegro a cultural crossroads and a geographic spectacle, with its coastline along the Adriatic Sea offering breathtaking vistas and easy maritime access.
Coastal Climate
In the summer months, temperatures along the coast can reach highs of around 30°C, creating perfect beach weather. The warm temperatures are complemented by refreshing sea breezes and about 12 hours of sunshine per day, making it an ideal time for sunbathing, swimming, and sailing. Winter temperatures on the coast are much milder than in the north, generally hovering around 10°C.
The official language of Montenegro is Montenegrin, which is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian. In 2007, Montenegrin was declared the official language by the new Constitution of Montenegro, following the country’s declaration of independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The Montenegrin language uses both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, with the Latin alphabet being more commonly used. Additionally, many Montenegrins are fluent in English, especially in tourist areas, and Russian, Italian, and German are also widely understood due to the country’s strong international tourism industry.
The official currency of Montenegro is the Euro (EUR), despite the country not being a member of the European Union. This was a unilateral decision by the Montenegrin government following the introduction of the Euro in 2002 when Montenegro decided to adopt the Euro in place of the Deutsche Mark, which had been in use since 1999. The use of the Euro helps to facilitate the economic stability of Montenegro and simplifies trade and tourism transactions with most European countries.
